After months of postponement, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) finally fixed Saturday, December 10, for the re-run national and state assembly elections in Rivers state. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC), winning all 16 seats in the election which held on Saturday, March 2015. However, the election was nullified by the election petitions tribunal and the Court of Appeal. INEC was ordered to conduct a rerun election within 60 days. Since then, the commission has been giving excuses why they cannot hold the election and the people have had no adequate representatives in the national and state assemblies. So much pressure was mounted on the commission that it had to give in and fix a date for the outstanding election

1. Violence

Most elections in Nigeria are often marred by violence and Rivers state is no exception. Lives have always been lost in most elections in Rivers state and this one may not be any differrent.

2. The blame game

Sure enough, no one will take responsibility if anything goes wrong. As it is with other elections, the contending parties will accuse each other of being the mastermind behind the election violence. The two major parties have already begun exchanging words and accusing each other ahead of the election.

3. Ballot box snatching

It is not a new thing for ballot boxes to be snatched during elections in Nigeria. Some politicians do not know how to play fair so they will engage the services of hoodlums to snatch ballot boxes. Being that the political parties want to win at all cost, you can expect that ballot boxes will be snatched.

4. Rigging of election
