Tragedy struck in Odeligbo village, Amagu Community Ikwo South in Ikwo local government area of Ebonyi State, when a twelve year-old boy Chibunna Nkpuke reportedly drowned in a river located at the back of his compound. It was gathered that Chibunna who left the house with his brothers to fetch water in the river entered the river to swim after fetching water but was unable to come out.
It was learnt that the deceased's younger brother ran home to inform the family of the ugly incident, but before they could arrive the boy was already dead. Some residents of the village alleged that the late Chibunna belonged to river goddess and that his parents were warned to appease the goddess else he will die in river one day. The sources added that the parents could not meet up with the requirements to appease the goddess, hence the boy’s death. A member of the community Romanus, however, refuted the claim, describing it as mere superstition which should not be believed by Christians.
