The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Thursday insisted that corrupt public office holders should be hanged, stressing that the punishment will prevent others from embezzling public funds. This follows the mind-boggling revelations arising from the $2.1bn arms procurement scandal. NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, while speaking to newsmen in Abuja said the ongoing detention of some people by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in connection with the alleged stealing and diversion of monies meant to prosecute war against insurgency in the North East justified the union’s stance on capital punishment for corrupt public officials.
Former high ranking government officials, including former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki, former governor of Sokoto, Attahiru Bafarawa are currently in the custody of EFCC over complicity in the $2.1bn arms deal. According to Comrade Wabba, corruption has sent so many Nigerians to their early grave, it would therefore be unjustifiable to allow those who engaged in the acts to go without punishment.
