The Federal Government has reduced the cost of the repair of the terminal of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu by 75 per cent.

President Muhammadu Buhari stated on Wednesday that the project would be delayed as a result of the reduction in the cost.

The President, via his Twitter handle, @MBuhari, following the signing of the 2018 budget in Abuja, tweeted, “The provision for construction of the terminal building at the Enugu airport was cut from N2bn to N500m, which will further delay the completion of this critical project.”

The President in his speech at the budget signing had stated that the National Assembly made cuts amounting to N347bn in allocations to 4,700 projects submitted to the lawmakers for consideration and introduced 6,403 projects of their own, amounting to N578bn.

“Many of the projects cut are critical and may be difficult, if not impossible, to implement with the reduced allocations. Some of the new projects inserted by the National Assembly have not been properly conceptualized, designed and cost, and will, therefore, be difficult to execute,” he stated.

The Federal Government had a few years ago, decided to give the Enugu airport a facelift, with modern facilities to attract more flights, following its upgrade to an international airport.

The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, had said during a recent facility tour of the airport that when modernized, it would attract multi-billion naira investments and boost economic growth in Enugu State and other surrounding states.

However, since the project commenced, several completion dates have been set for the terminal’s completion.

According to a source, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the Enugu and Port Harcourt international airport projects, which are being worked on simultaneously, will be delayed, with no definite completion dates.
