Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged the Federal Government to pursue the restructuring of the Nigerian system, stating that it should be the new agenda of the nation at 57. The party said that it was necessary for the nation to be restructured, adding that the current configuration of the nation does not favour any of the six geopolitical zones of the country. PDP made the call in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during the graduation of over 200 youths of Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, who had completed a training in Information Communication Technology, ICT, management organised by the Grassroots Development Initiative, GDI. Speaking at the event, weekend, the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Mr. Samuel Nwanosike, called on the Federal Government to listen to the yearnings of the people and do the needful by commencing a process of restructuring the country.

Nwanosike urged the Federal Government to decentralize power and give more of its responsibilities to the states, expressing worries that some states seem dead. Nwanosike noted that Nigeria as a nation at 57 has not done well in development, saying, “Nigeria as a nation has not done well. If the country had done well, there would not be agitation left, right and centre. All over the nation, there are agitations and cries for secession. What we are saying is that we need to restructure the nation and the governance system. “At 57, we need to restructure this country to be able to allow it work. The country has not been working for any region, South-South, South-East, South-West, North-West, North-East, North-Central, no one can say that it had worked for them. If it had worked for them, the current agitations would not be the order of the day. We believe that at 57 Nigeria should be restructured and that should be done now.” While stating that the ICT training will help reduce criminality among youths in the state, Nwanosike added: “We need to allow the state own more of the activities of government. We need to allow power to be devolved from the centre to the states so that the states can work because many of our states are dead.”
