The corruption probe of the emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has been suspended. Sanu was alleged to have misappropriated N6 billion of the emirates funds. The Kano State assembly had last week set up an eight-man ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged misappropriation. But the assembly made a U-turn on Monday, May 22, after receiving a letter from the State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who sought the suspension of the probe. Speaker of the assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, notified his colleagues of Ganduje's letter to the House on Monday.

According to the Speaker, Ganduje said in the letter that prominent Nigerians including Acting President Yemi Osinbajo; Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Aliko Dangote among others pleaded on behalf of Sanusi. Rurum also quoted the Governor as saying that the monarch "admitted all his mistakes and tendered an apology" at a peace meeting held in Kaduna. Sanusi came under scrutiny following his criticism of the northern establishment. He had described the north as the poorest region in the country – a statement that angered leaders in the region.
